The Car for This Stay

Why the BMW X7 works in Montreux

Some families arrive in Montreux with cousins, grandparents and a long list of things to see. The X7 suits that kind of trip: seven seats across three rows, a glass roof that brings the mountains into the cabin, and space for everyone's bags. Château de Chillon is 15 minutes from town and lies on the way to the Alps, so a morning at the castle and an afternoon on the glacier fit into one outing. If you rent a BMW X7 in Montreux, that is the day to plan first.

  • Chillon, then the glacier Visit the castle when it opens, then carry on up the Rhône valley to Aigle and through Les Diablerets to Col du Pillon. Glacier 3000 is about 1h15 from Montreux in total, and the castle is already done.
  • A glass roof for the climb The panoramic roof comes into its own between Aigle and Les Diablerets, where the valley narrows and the peaks close in. The children see more than the seat in front of them.
  • Bags for a long stay Five large suitcases with all seven seats in use, about nine with the third row folded. Send us the list, strollers included, and we confirm it works before delivery.
  • Quiet on the motorway The A9 from Montreux to Aigle is quick, and the X7 is hushed at speed. The long stretch of the day passes calmly, leaving energy for the suspension bridge at the top.

Local know-how

Good to know in Montreux

Glacier 3000 practicalities

There is snow at 3,000 metres even in July, and it is far colder than by the lake. Pack layers for the children; the car waits at Col du Pillon while you ride the cable car.

Timing Chillon

Coach groups tend to arrive mid-morning. Come at opening time or late in the afternoon and parking near the castle is much easier.

Col du Pillon in winter

The road through Les Diablerets climbs into real snow country in winter. Chains may be signposted as compulsory on snowy days; give us your dates and we prepare the car accordingly.

Questions

BMW X7 in Montreux: questions we get asked

Can we really see Chillon and Glacier 3000 in one day?

Yes, with an early start. The castle takes a morning, the drive on to Col du Pillon is roughly an hour, and you are back on the Riviera for the evening. In peak summer, check the cable car times first.

We are two families travelling together. Is one X7 enough?

It seats seven. Beyond that, the usual answer is a second car: a Mercedes V-Class for the larger group, or a Mercedes GLS if you prefer two similar SUVs. Both can be delivered together.

Is the road to Col du Pillon tricky in a car this size?

No. It is a main road in good condition; the bends above Les Diablerets are tighter, so take them steadily and let faster locals pass. In winter, ask for the car to be prepared for snow.

Will a stroller fit alongside the suitcases?

Usually, yes. Five large suitcases fit with all seats up, and a folded stroller can often go beside them. Send us your exact list and we confirm before you arrive.
