Why the Mercedes GLS works in Montreux

A grand-hotel stay on the Riviera has its own rhythm: breakfast over the lake, a day out, back in time to change for the evening. The GLS fits that rhythm. Good to know in Montreux

The pass stays open all year, but from November the road above Le Sépey can turn white. Ask for the car to be prepared for winter, and allow extra time on Saturday mornings in ski season, when traffic to Gstaad builds.

Back before the festival crowds

On Jazz Festival evenings the lakefront slows to walking pace. Leave Gstaad by mid-afternoon to be at your hotel before the concert crowds gather.

Staying in Vevey

The Trois Couronnes sits right on the Vevey quay, and we can hand over the car at its entrance. The Lavaux vineyards begin just west of town, and Montreux is about 15 minutes along the lake.

Mercedes GLS in Montreux: questions we get asked

How long is the drive from Montreux to Gstaad for lunch?

Allow about an hour each way via Aigle and Col des Mosses. Leave around half past ten, lunch on the Promenade and you are back by the lake in the late afternoon.

Is Col des Mosses a sensible drive with the family in winter?

It is a main road kept open through the winter, and the GLS has all-wheel drive. With winter tyres it is a comfortable trip; on heavy snow days signs may require chains, and we cover winter driving in the handover briefing.

Which Riviera hotels are easiest with a car the size of the GLS?

The palace hotels in Montreux and Vevey are used to large cars at the door and handle them through valet. If you are staying in a private apartment, send us the address so we can check access and parking first.

Our holiday continues in the Bernese Oberland. Can we leave the GLS in Interlaken?

Yes. Interlaken is a one-way return point, as are Gstaad and Geneva, so the family can drive on from the lake to the mountains without changing cars.
