Why the Range Rover Sport works in Geneva

Geneva is a good base for someone who enjoys driving, as long as you leave the city early. In about an hour you can be climbing from Aigle toward the Col des Mosses or following the lake through the vineyards of La Côte, and the family can come too. The Sport sits lower and responds more eagerly than the full-size Range Rover, without giving up five seats or a boot for four suitcases.   • Annecy and its col Annecy is 45 minutes by autoroute. Instead of stopping in town, follow the eastern shore through Talloires and climb to the Col de la Forclaz for the view straight down the lake.

Swiss limits are enforced

Outside towns the usual limit is 80 km/h, in towns 50. Serious speeding in Switzerland is treated as a criminal offence, not just a fine. Enjoy the corners rather than the straights.

Go early on summer weekends

By late morning the lake road and the cols fill with cyclists, motorbikes and day traffic. Leave Geneva early and the best stretches are much quieter.

French cols out of season

From 1 November to 31 March, French mountain zones require winter tyres or chains in the car, and some high passes close for snow. If your driving days fall in that window, tell us where you plan to go.

Yes, if you leave in the morning. Plan a full day with lunch in Gstaad; from Aigle, the motorway brings you back to Geneva in about an hour.

Should I choose the Sport or the full-size Range Rover?

If you will mostly drive yourself, the Sport. If someone else will be driving and the rear seat matters more, the Range Rover HSE or the long-wheelbase model is the better choice.

Is the Sport comfortable for children on mountain roads?

It is a genuine five-seater with a full rear bench. On winding cols, plan a stop every hour or so for anyone prone to car sickness; Château-d'Oex and Les Diablerets make natural breaks.
